The Graduate Public Practice program is lead by Suzanne Lacy.

Read Sue Bell Yank’s essay written on the occasion here.

The graduate students worked toward envisioning an art practice that reaches outside of the gallery to comment upon, or engage with, new public(s) for art.

Events presented in conjunction with this exhibition included a myth-making workshop, a dream group, a workshop on envisioning new uses for alleys, a conversation and art critique by and with Chinese international students, and a Highway 99 pit stop video screening. In addition, Los Angeles-based photographer Susan Slade Sanchez offered complimentary portraits for LGBTQ couples. She wanted “to give a voice, or better, a face to what a long-term LGBTQ couple looks like in 2013.”

A reception was also held for Collective Situations: Readings in Contemporary Latin American Art 1995-2010, a discussion part of Social Practice in Questions…, the culmination of Bill Kelley Jr.’s residency at 18th Street Art Center with invited guest speakers María Fernanda Cartagena, Caleb Duarte, Grant Kester, Suzanne Lacy, and Stephen Wright.

Their actions include synchronized procedures of movement, new folk dances, spectacles, marches, and inventing and reenacting moments in the lives of individuals, communities, social institutions, peoples, states, and of humanity.

In her lecture, Yahalomi presented key strategies developed by the movement alongside examples of previous actions.
Black Light Night was a special event for the closing of In the Good Name of the Company. For the evening, the exhibition was lit only by black lights and featured a listening party for Scott Benzel’s accompanying sound piece, String Quartet No. 2., a four-channel sound installation.

The quartet is based on field recordings of street sounds found around Los Angeles–the sounds of car alarms, helicopters, the Metro Rail, pedestrian crossings, and traffic–and structured loosely after Morton Feldman’s String Quartet Number 2. It debuted at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis in 2011. In the Good Name of the Company was its Los Angeles debut.

In the Good Name of the Company

February 23, 2013

ForYourArt hosted an opening reception for an exhibition of works produced by or with the Colby Poster Printing Company, curated by Jan Tumlir, with Christopher Michlig and Brian Roettinger. In the Good Name of the Company presented works by Kathryn Andrews, Scott Benzel, Peter Coffin, Sam Durant, Eve Fowler, Emilie Halpern, Imprenta, Simon Johnston, Christopher Michlig, Brian Roettinger, Allen Ruppersberg, Ed Ruscha, and many more alongside a representative selection of posters from Colby’s own archive.

Typically employed to promote neighborhood events such as street fairs, small-scale musical concerts and the like, they would find a new clientele when Ed Ruscha contracted a rival company in 1962 to produce the announcement for the exhibition New Paintings of Common Objects at the Pasadena Art Museum. Since then, the Colby Poster Printing Company has gone on to serve as an important resource to a broad range of LA-based artists, from Allen Ruppersberg (who transcribed Allen Ginsberg’s Howl onto Colby posters in 2003) to Eve Fowler (who did much the same with Gertrude Stein’s Tender Buttons in 2012).

Colby has provided artists with a means to escape the confines of the studio or the white cube. Instead, through the poster medium, artists could engage the life of the street. As such, their posters became a form of public art perfectly suited to the LA context with its inherent transience and disposability. In one way or another, the artists featured in this exhibition have used the poster as a means to shape our experience of the street and the city.

About the Colby Poster Printing Company

The Los Angeles based Colby Poster Printing Company has long been a friend to local artists. Their fluorescent posters have been disseminated on every available high-traffic-adjacent surface in the city. Their extensive collection of over 150 wood and metal typefaces, usually bold and generally san serif, are by now an integral part of the visual aesthetic of Los Angeles. Throughout the years, posters promoting everything from west coast punk and heavy metal concerts in the 1980s to swap meets, street fairs, gun and bridal shows, local political campaigns, and too many artist projects to mention have been printed on Colby’s restless Heidelberg letterset press. A family owned and operated union print shop since 1948, the Colby Poster Printing Company closed its doors forever on December 31, 2012.

X-TRA celebrated 15 years in Los Angeles with 15 days of programming at ForYourArt. Participants explored the history of X-TRA. They heard supporters and enthusiasts in conjunction with the unveiling of X-TRA’s new design and new website.

X-TRA is the longest running critical art journal in Los Angeles; it has chugged on for 15 years and 57 issues. It began the next fifteen years with a 15-day celebration and the launch of a new format, design, and website. Events were hosted every night of the celebration at FYA’s space at 6020 Wilshire Blvd. or at specified off-site locations. During their 15-day stay at FYA, X-TRA presented an installation of the complete library and ephemera of X-TRA and Project X Foundation for Art & Criticism.

The X-TRA store featured back catalogue and artist editions along with special offers and their 15th Anniversary shopping bag. Visitors were encouraged to browse all 57 issues of X-TRA and take home their favorites.

You can find a full schedule of the 15 days here and find more information on the programming on X-TRA’s site.

The Planter Show, curated by Matt Merkel Hess and Lisa Sitko, was an exploration of the sculptural, functional, and cultural implications of putting plants into containers. In the last few years, an increasing number of artists have made planters and standalone sculptures that include plants, or have included potted plants in installations. For this show, emerging and established Los Angeles artists exhibited various pots and sculptures that expanded on the theme of the planter.

Artists’ works ranged from straightforward pots with holes in the bottom to sculptures that reconsider the hybrid outdoor-indoor space created by a plant in a portable container. The four-day show also included terrariums, free ready-to-plant cuttings, and a container gardening ‘zine as well as an opening reception, film screening, and interactive workshops all focused around plants in various ways.

Carolyn Kaylor’s film Cereus & Whatnot - shot on super 8 and 16mm film, printed to 16mm, color, mono optical sound – was screened on Friday. The film is a dramatic allegory inspired by and partly about an enigmatic plant commonly known as the Night Blooming Cereus. Employing documentary and narrative elements, it is a meditation on nature in captivity, life, death and cinematic expectation.

Artist and sustainable horticulturist Kim Kelly lead an indigo dye workshop where guests learned to transform textiles with this timeless technique, which uses the indigo plant. Mark Merkel Hess and special guests taught a free workshop on potted plant care, Planter Workshop: From Purple to Green Thumb
, for those who purchased a planter at our show.

Multidisciplinary artist Gilad Ratman will exhibit next year at the Israel pavilion at the Venice Biennale. The New York and Tel Aviv based artist delivered a special presentation of his work at ForYourArt’s 6020 Wilshire Blvd. space. The event was presented by Tel Aviv’s Braverman Gallery and Artis, an American non-profit that supports contemporary Israeli artists as well as promotes cultural understanding.

Ratman’s videos and installations often focus on nature and human behavior. He has been a part of several group and solo shows at such notable institutions as MoMA/P.S. 1, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and Israel Museum, Jerusalem. At the talk at FYA, Ratman discussed his recent work and gave a preview of the project to be shown at the 2013 Venice Biennale.

Around the Clock: 24 Hour Donut City II, LACMA’s Choice

September 22-23, 2012

A second iteration of Around the Clock: 24 Hour Donut Citywas held to coincide with LACMA’s second 24-hour screening of The Clock this year. As with the first 24 Hour Donut City, ForYourArt offered new donut selections from around Los Angeles to LACMA guests throughout the complete screening of Christian Marclay’s work.

The Clock is a compilation of film clips that represent specific times, creating a functional clock that can be synchronized to a real day. Thousands of clips from various genres of film were collected and pieced together to create this moving collage of time.

With this round-the-clock theme, ForYourArt created an edible exhibition of donuts inspired by L.A.’s famous 24-hour donut shops and selected by LACMA staff. The donuts served as a marking of time with new choices presented every two hours. Guests were able to learn more about The Clock through newly commissioned essays by art critics Andrew Berardini and Ed Schad. Donut drawings were colored and decorated the walls just as they did at our first donut-themed event.

Curator Janet Levy recently paid homage to another Janet – Janet Schmuckal, founder of the Museum of Temporary Art – with her See Line Gallery exhibition MoTA (Museum of Temporary Art). From 1974-1982, Schmuckal’s museum acted as an alternative venue
for the arts, a multi-media press, a community arts program, a small press collection and a multi-media
performance space in Washington, D.C.

In conjunction with Levy’s exhibition, the Janet & Janet Shop was assembled at ForYourArt’s 6020 Wilshire Blvd. space with an opening reception that featured music by NATHANETICS.
The artworks in the Janet & Janet Shop considered space, time and temporariness as the names of two curators played off of each other. Included were works on
paper, prints, sculpture and installation as well as a performance by Corey Fogel, poster workshop with Michael Coleman, and an opportunity to take home the buttons that constituted Michael Worthington’s work Just a Band.

Artists represented included, Nathan Bell, Jesse Benson, Scott Benzel, Michael Coleman, Chris Eichenseer, Corey Fogel,
Katherine Gray, Matthew Greene, Edgar Heap of Birds, Wendy Heldman, Matthew Hoffman, Chad Kouri,
Jow, Karen Lofgren, Christian Morin, Thomas Müller, Eamon O’Kane, Zack Stadel, Michael Worthington.
